Regeneración - Pajaro Valley Climate Action

Mission

Regeneración's mission is to achieve climate justice through community-
driven solutions.

The Big Idea

Regeneración’s work is grounded in the principle that climate change is a
social, economic, and environmental justice issue with local impacts, and
solutions must be community-driven in order to build just, climate-resilient
communities.
Since 2016 Regeneración has worked to achieve justice in partnership with
many local organizations, including environmental, health, arts, and social
service entities. Our Climate of Hope forums have included collaboration with
and drawn widespread audiences of people working in agriculture, activists,
students, and state-wide agencies.
To center equity in climate response we:
• Discover and elevate stories of how climate change is impacting our
agricultural community.
• Grow young environmental justice champions, amplifying their voices,
actions, and leadership.
• Inform local strategies and policies addressing climate change.
• Educate and empower actions to reduce GHG emissions.
• Partner with local governments and others to support health and well-being
of all now and into the future.

How does your organization benefit Monterey County?

Regeneración builds bridges between groups in the Monterey
Bay region who are not yet connected in order to develop a large, diverse,
unifed, equitable movement to protect a livable planet. We primarily
serve the Pajaro Valley with a particular focus on the low income farmworker communities in North Monterey County and downtown Watsonville but are also involved in major regional initiatives such as Climate Resilient Monterey Bay. We enroll Service Learners from CSUMB to assist with event support, research, communications, and community engagement and make presentations to other Monterey County groups. We remain involved in Pajaro long term recovery efforts and will finalize community priorities for building a more climate resilient area with a list of recommended greenhouse gas reducing projects favored by residents. We convene the Monterey Bay Area Climate Justice Collaborative, uniting frontline community serving organizations with climate practitioners from cities and counties around the Monterey Bay.

The Regeneración Photovoice project allowed me to embrace and discuss the importance and impact of climate change in our community as well as the experiences of those of us who have been affected by natural disasters. This amazing opportunity has broadened my knowledge and given me reason to keep fighting to spread awareness about the stories and lives of those unspoken for.
