Hope Horses & Kids

Mission

Hope, Horses & Kids provides safe and affordable Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) opportunities to individuals of all ages who live with physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges. These activities promote developmental and educational skills while building confidence through the quiet strength of the horse.

The Big Idea

There is something magical that happens when a child gently brushes a miniature horse, feeds a curious goat, or laughs as a calf follows them through the arena. At Hope, Horses & Kids, this magic lives at the heart of our healing barnyard.

In addition to our beloved program horses, our herd now includes a donkey, cow and calf, sheep, a goat, rabbits, chickens, a cat, a dog, and even a turtle—each one playing a special role in connecting with children and youth. These gentle animals spark joy, build trust, and help our participants develop empathy, confidence, and essential life skills.

Many of our animals have been rescued or rehabilitated, and their stories create powerful bonds with children navigating their own challenges. With your support, we’ll continue providing high-quality nutrition, veterinary care, and daily supplies—ensuring the magic of these healing connections thrives year-round.

How does your organization benefit Monterey County?

Hope, Horses & Kids serves youth from across Monterey County, with a primary location at Rancho Cielo Youth Campus just east of Salinas—providing direct access to life-changing experiences for Rancho Cielo students. We also partner with the Monterey County Office of Education to offer emotional and behavioral support for Special Education classrooms, and weekly Equine Assisted Learning sessions for North Salinas High School’s Special Ed class.

Through our partnership with Valley Health Associates, we provide weekly sessions for youth diagnosed with substance use disorders, supporting recovery through animal-assisted healing. We also serve homeschool families and the broader community through recreational and life skills programming.

Our recent addition of Horse Powered Reading integrates literacy development into equine sessions, helping youth build confidence both in the saddle and in the classroom. Across all programs, we promote healing, growth, and leadership—one connection at a time.

I’ve had the privilege of witnessing firsthand the quiet, powerful transformations that happen every day at Hope, Horses & Kids. I’ve watched hesitant teens from Rancho Cielo walk into a session guarded and unsure, only to leave with bright smiles, standing taller, and radiating confidence. There’s a magic in the way the animals invite trust and break down barriers without saying a word. Whether it’s a neurodivergent child finding calm through the rhythmic sway of a horse, or a determined young rider coaxing a mini horse into a hula hoop with patience and resilience—these moments speak volumes. The animals become teachers, mirrors, and companions, guiding our youth to discover self-worth, focus, and joy. This is the heart of our work. These are the experiences that change lives—not just for a day, but for a lifetime.
