Big Sur Fire

Mission

The Big Sur Volunteer Fire Brigade is a group of community members providing dependable fire and emergency services to all of Big Sur with a spirit of teamwork, respect and integrity.

The Big Idea

Big Sur Fire is launching a vital infrastructure project: a new fire station to serve the remote South Coast region of Big Sur. This multi-year effort is essential to improving emergency response in an area long challenged by difficult access, frequent road closures, and increasing wildfire risk. The station will significantly reduce response times for wildfires, medical emergencies, and accidents, allowing for faster deployment of personnel and equipment. Its strategic location will strengthen public safety, protect natural resources, and offer critical support to residents and visitors alike. Due to complex permitting, environmental regulations, and the logistical difficulties of building in such a remote location, the project requires careful, phased planning. Rising construction costs and limited access also demand sustained fundraising over several years. Once completed, the station will provide lasting resilience and peace of mind for one of Monterey County’s most underserved regions.

How does your organization benefit Monterey County?

Big Sur Fire is the sole all-risk 911emergency response organization operating south of the Bixby Bridge, extending its services all the way to the Monterey County line. Our volunteer fire department positively impacts the entire coastal Big Sur community, including primary ridge and trail areas spanning over 300 square miles. Each year, our crews respond to over 250 emergency calls. Serving the notoriously rugged and rural Big Sur area presents unique challenges. The emergency services we provide benefit both residents and the millions of annual visitors who travel to Big Sur. Many of our calls also involve Monterey County residents. Big Sur Fire collaborates with key response partners such as Mid Coast Fire Brigade, Monterey County Sheriff, California State Parks, Cal Fire, California Highway Patrol, American Medical Response, and the US Forest Service.

After being retired for 25 years as a Big Sur volunteer firefighter, I found myself in need of an emergency response. Big Sur Fire’s response was quick and very professional. They were able to stabilize me and get me to the rescue helicopter for a trip to the trauma center. It was a very positive experience for me to experience my own community members coming to my rescue in such a professional way.
